CGPA TO GPA Calculator
CGPA to GPA conversion needs lots of time and energy and involves lots of formulas. That’s why we made a tool for conversion of CGPA into GPA. This tool is known as CGPA to GPA calculator. Let’s understand about this toll and CGPA to GPA calculation.
How to calculate GPA from CGPA?
Conversion of CGPA into GPA usually depends on the specific grading scale of the institution, but I’ll describe a standard method and provide an example.
Step 1: Understand the scales for conversion of CGPA into GPA. CGPA is usually calculated on a 10-point scale, whereas GPA is usually calculated on a 4-point scale.
Step 2: Apply formula GPA = CGPA × 0.4.
Step 3: Put all the related values in that formula.
Step 4: Now try to do all the required calculations and you will get CGPA.
Let’s understand it with some easy Examples
If you got 8.5.CGPA then calculate your GPA value.
- CGPA = 8.5
- Apply the formula: GPA = 8.5 × 0.4 = 3.4
- And the GPA = 3.4
Let’s take another Example: where CGPA is 9.0:
- CGPA = 9.0
- GPA = 9.0 × 0.4 = 3.6
So, a CGPA of 9.0 would convert to a GPA of 3.6.

A 5-point scale means the formula GPA = (CGPA × 4) / 5 is used.
A 12-point scale means the formula GPA = (CGPA × 4) / 12 is used.
A 20-point scale means the formula GPA = (CGPA × 4) / 20 is used.
CGPA to GPA conversion for different university
Different universities use different scales to evaluate their academic grades. Let’s understand them one by one.
1. Indian Universities
In India, most universities use the 10-point CGPA scale. The conversion formula for GPA on a 4-point scale is often approximated by the 0.4 factor.
Conversion Example:
CGPA (10-point) | GPA (4-point) |
10.0 | 4.0 |
9.5 | 3.8 |
9.0 | 3.6 |
8.0 | 3.2 |
7.0 | 2.8 |
6.0 | 2.4 |
5.0 | 2.0 |
Conversion Formula: GPA = CGPA × 0.4
2. United State universities (4-point scale) : Many universities in the U.S. still use a 4.0 scale for GPA. They can follow other systems like the 7-point scale or 10-point scale, which is appropriate to their universities academic guidelines.
Example of a Conversion:
CGPA = 9.0 → GPA = 3.6
CGPA = 8.0 → GPA = 3.2
3. European Universities: Many European universities often follow the ECTS grading scale, which is different from the traditional GPA system. The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System is common in Europe. It is especially used for students who want international mobility.
ECTS Conversion Scale:
Grade (ECTS) | Description | GPA Equivalent |
A | Excellent | 4.0 |
B | Very Good | 3.5 |
C | Good | 3.0 |
D | Satisfactory | 2.5 |
E | Sufficient | 2.0 |
F | Fail | 0.0 |
4. Australian Universities (7-point scale) : Some Australian universities also use a 7-point scale for CGPA .If you want to compare CGPA then there are specific guidelines to compare CGPA to a GPA on a 4-point scale
Table for Conversion Examples:
CGPA (7-point scale) | GPA (4-point scale) |
7.0 | 4.0 |
6.0 | 3.5 |
5.0 | 3.0 |
4.0 | 2.5 |
3.0 | 2.0 |
Example:
- 7-point CGPA = 6.0 → GPA = 3.5
- 7-point CGPA = 4.0 → GPA = 2.5
5. Philippines university (5-point scale): Universities of the Philippines use a 5-point scale for grading and this scale needs to be converted to an international GPA scale.
Table for Conversion Examples:
CGPA (5-point scale) | GPA (4-point scale) |
5.0 | 4.0 |
4.5 | 3.8 |
4.0 | 3.2 |
3.5 | 2.8 |
3.0 | 2.4 |
2.5 | 2.0 |
Example:
- 5-point CGPA = 4.0 → GPA = 3.2
- 5-point CGPA = 3.0 → GPA = 2.4
6. Canada university (4-point scale): Most of the Canadian universities use the 4-point scale for GPA which is similar to the U.S. However, some Canadian institutions also use letter grades to assign values, which are then converted to CGPA. Some universities use a percentage scale (e.g., 100% scale), which can be converted to GPA.
Some Common Conversion examples:
