A credit hour is the amount of time that students spend in a specific subject’s class. Basically one credit hour means one hour of lecture but it is not completely true a credit hour is based on a subject. If your subject contains more credit, then you will get more credit hours for that subject and if your subject has less weightage then it will provide you less credit for that subject.
How to calculate credit hours?
Credit hours significantly depend on your grading scales to calculate CGPA; you need to multiply your grade points by the credit hours of each course. Credit hours completely depend on the weight of the course. Higher credit hours will have a high influence on the CGPA. Let’s discuss how to calculate credit hours.
For Example: You have following credits in a semester:
- Maths: 3 credit hours
- History: 4 credit hours
- Chemistry: 2 credit hours
- Physics: 1 credit hour
Step 1: First Understand Your Credit Hours
- Maths: 3 credit hours = 3 hours per week.
- History: 4 credit hours = 4 hours per week.
- Chemistry: 2-credit lab course = 2 hours per week in the lab.
- Physics: 1-credit course. means 1 hour per week, with limited homework.
Step 2: Calculate Total Classroom Time
- Maths: 3 credit hours = 3 hours of class per week
- History: 4 credit hours = 4 hours of class per week
- Chemistry: 2 credit hours = 2 hours of class per week
- Physics: 1 credit hour = 1 hour of class per week
Total Classroom Hours per Week:
3 (Math) + 4 (History) + 2 (Chemistry) + 1 (Physics) = 10 hours per week
Step 3: Calculate Total Study Hours Outside Class Time
For each credit hour, students are generally expected to spend 2 hours outside of class studying, doing homework, or completing assignments.
- Math (3 credit hours): 3 x 2 = 6 hours of study per week
- History (4 credit hours): 4 x 2 = 8 hours of study per week
- Chemistry (2 credit hours): 2 x 2 = 4 hours of study per week
- Physics (1 credit hour): 1 x 2 = 2 hours of study per week
Total Study Hours per Week:
6 (Math) + 8 (History) + 4 (Chemistry) + 2 (PE) = 20 hours per week
Step 4: Total Hours per Week for the Entire Semester
Now, let’s add all the classroom and study hours:
- Total Classroom Time per Week: 10 hours
- Total Study Time per Week: 20 hours
Total Hours per Week
= 10 (class) + 20 (study)
= 30 hours per week
